U13 Sharks – 2012 Season Summary

It was always going to be hard following the unbeaten 2011 season when combined with the fact that the team were now playing in the U13 league. After narrowly losing the first few games the team went on the remian unbeaten in the second half of the season which bodes well for next season. There is further confidence for next season as all the team this year were U12 playing in the U13 league.

The team was again captained by Elliot Evlyn-Bufton who again led from the front  retiring not out for 30 plus in 4 of his 8 innings as well as keeping wicket. The bowling attack was led by Joe Trickett and Charlie Conquest. Both were superbly consistent all season with the highlight being Charlie’s 4 wickets in a row -v- Wellington. The whole team added to the success this season – from Nathan Colclough’s consistent bowling and fielding to new boy Byron Marshall’s commitment in the field. There were spectacular catches from Sam Mottershead and Jake Leonard, the ever present commitment of Will Beech and Charlie Gamble and Harry Maddox, who despite only joining the team mid way through the season showed what 100 per cent commitment is really about.

U13 Comets – 2012 Season Summary

Despite the worst “Summer” on record the team managed to play 8 games winning 3 of them. Despite splitting our players into two squads we still had 18 to pick from with most players making themselves available every week which demonstrated the committment of everyone and how much they were enjoying their cricket. Inevitably there were dissapointed faces some weeks when the teams were announced but hopefully all the players thought that they had a reasonable number of chances to display their talents and to develop as week by week the performances improved.

The standout match of the season was against the U13A with some fantastic batting, bowling and fielding on display from both teams. The boys with the best batting and bowling averages were Ben Buchan (average 17) and Jake Tomkinson (best stats 3 wickets for 11 runs) who were both playing at U13 level for the first time and showed fantastic consistency througout the season. William Lucas volunteered to stand behind the stumps for the first match and the fact that he stayed there all season and won the most improved player award says everything. For once, the teams most experienced players Josh McCormack and Ian Holdroyd were unable to achieve their usual consistency – this was despite them putting in many extra hours in the nets by themselves – however they both played several games for the U15s and gained valuable experience there. The season finished on a high note with the best team performance of the season with a great win at Allscott with Ian being the first batman obliged to retire during the season with a great knock of 33 not out.

There were many other great personal performances and a great team spirit so a very well done to Jude, George, Ben, Jake, Matt, Will, Tryfan, Eathan, Dan, Jack, Felix, Ben, Will, Josh, Ian, Owen and Dylan. With half the team moving onto the next age group next year it will be upto the younger element to prove their potential – going by their performances this year the club should have every confidence in them.

Just to end on a note of thanks to Pete Maltby who has team coach gave many hours of his time encouraging and passing on his in depth knowledge of the game, always with good humour and an endless supply of patience. Well done and thanks Pete.
